Abstract

Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) has natural antioxidant activity because contains high phenol or flavonoid compounds. Peel-off gel mask is one type of mask that is very practical in its use where after the mask dries it can be cleaned by removing the gel layer from the skin without rinsing with water. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of PVA and propylene glycol variatons on the physical mask properties of secang wood extract which has antioxidant activities. Secang wood was extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol. The extracbyts made into a peel-off gel mask with a percentage of 0.2% extract and variation in PVA and propylene glycol concentrations of (8%: 12%) for F I, (10%: 10%) for F II, (12 %: 8%) for F III , and (14%: 6%) for F IV. Antioxidant activity of extracts and formulas were tested by the DPPH method (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrihydrazil). Evaluation of physical properties includes organoleptic, homogenity, viscosity, dispersion, adhesion, drying time, pH, and stability. The data were analyzed statistically using SPSS application. The results showed that an increase in the concentration of PVA and a decrease in the concentration of propylene glycol caused an increase in viscosity and a decrease in adhesion, dispersibility and drying time. Formula that had better physical properties and stability were formula 2 with a base variation of PVA:Propilen Glikol (10%:10%) and the best formula that has antioxidant activity of peel-off gel mask was formula 1.
