Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in geriatric patients is at risk for complication. The presence of complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to the occurrence of polypharmacy that potentially leads to drug interaction. This study aims to determine the occurrence of drug interaction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were hospitalized at Dr. Soehadi Prijonegoro Regional Public Hospital in Sragen Regency. The study used descriptive method with retrospective data retrieval. The sample in this study was geriatric patients undergoing treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus who meet the inclusion criteria in the hospitalization service of Dr. Soehadi Prijonegoro Regional Public Hospital in Sragen Regency from 1 January 2017 - 31 December 2017. The results show that drug interactions is found in 26 patients out of 64 samples (40.63%) with a total occurrence of drug interaction 42 cases. The most common drug interaction belongs to moderate category, which is 31 cases (73.81%). The most frequent occurrence is the interaction between metformin with ondansetron, which is 9 cases. The most frequent interaction mechanism is the pharmacokinetic interaction, which is 19 cases (45.24%). Keywords: Type 2 DM, drug interaction, geriatric
