Abstract
Pyoderma is an infectious disease of the skin caused by pus-producing bacteria, so that the examination often shows the efflorescence of pustules or greenish yellow crusts. One of the bacteria that causes pyoderma is Staphylococcus aureus (Harlim, 2019). A plant that is often used by Indonesians is salam (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.) with various compounds. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of bay leaves, compound content and mechanisms against bacteria. The research was conducted by studying literature through google search, google scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, DOAJ and the Garuda portal with a range of 2010-2020. The literature used as data in this study was 11 journals that met the inclusion criteria. The results of literature studies show that the salam plant contains compounds such as flavonoids, steroids, phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, triterpenoids, α-pinene and linalool (Trisnawati et al., 2020; Wilapangga and Sari, 2018; Killis et al., 2020; Rahim et al., 2018) which can inhibit the growth of the Staphylococcus aureus. Keywords: antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus, Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.)
