Abstract

Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) contains brazilin which has antioxidant activity. Serum is one of the cosmetics with high levels of active substances. The purpose of this study was to know the physical quality and the stability of the serum ethanol extract of Secang wood, to determine whether the serum ethanol extract of secang wood had antioxidant activity, and to know the IC50 value obtained from the serum ethanol extract of secang wood with variations in the extract concentration of 0.5%, 1%, and 2%. This study used five formulas, namely negative control, positive control, dan three formulas with concentrations of ethanol extract of secang wood of 0.5%, 1%, dan 2%. The method used to measure the antioxidant activity of serum is the DPPH method, by looking at the IC50 value. The IC50 was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Evaluation of the physical properties of the preparation includes organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, dispersibility, dan stability. Data were analyzed using the SPSS application. The results showed that the serum with the best physical quality dan IC50 value was serum with an extract concentration of 2%, with an IC50 value of 34.2888 ppm dan was included in the very strong antioxidant category.
