Abstract

Burns are skin tissue damage caused by contact with heat conductors such as fire, hot water, and electric shock. Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) contains flavonoid, tannin, saponin, alkaloid, and brazilin. Active compounds can be an alternative for wound healing. Gel is a semi-solid preparation used topically. Rabbits have strong body defenses and do not require special shelter. Purpose of this study was to determine the physical quality of the gel, the stability of the gel, the effect of the gel preparation and the concentration of the effective dose for healing burns. Secang wood ethanol extract was prepared by maceration method. Secang wood extract gel formulated in concentrations of 5, 10, and 15%. Gel preparations were tested for physical quality and stability. The effect of the gel preparation was carried out on the back of the New Zealand rabbit induced with hot metal. The results of showed that secang wood extract had good physical quality and stability. Gel preparation concentration of 15% had burn healing activity in New Zealand rabbits. The results of the analysis for the diameter and percentage of burns using the Kruskal wallis statistic have a significance of 0.000 <0.05, indicating that diameter and percentage of burns have an influence on burn healing in New Zealand rabbits.
