Abstract

Alpha arbutin is a skin lightening agent that is relatively safer than hydroquinone. Alpha-arbutin worked by inhibiting epidermal melanin biosynthesis by inhibiting the enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine and dopa. To make it easier to use, serum gel was choosen. This study aims to determine whether alpha arbutin can be made into serum gel preparations, to determine the variation and concentration of Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent that produces serum gel that has good stability and physical quality Alpha arbutin gel serum is made in 3 formulas with variation in the concentration of Carbopol 940 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%. In this study, the preparation used the gel preparation method, the difference was that the consistency of the serum gel was not too thick. In this study, physical quality tests were carried out, namely: organoleptic test, homogeneity test, spreadability test, adhesion test, viscosity test and pH test. Data were analyzed statistically using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, one way ANOVA, post hoc test with a 95% confidence level. The results of this study indicated (1) that Alpha arbutin can be used as a serum gel. (2) Variation in the concentration of carbopol 940 can affect the spreadability, adhesion, viscosity, and pH. (3) The best serum gel formula is formula II, because it has a consistency that is easy to apply and most preferably the hedonic test. Key words :Serum, Gel, Alpha arbutin. Carbopol 940
