Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease with a component of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by an imbalance of oxidants and antioxidants in the body. Prevention of oxidations efforts can be done by increasing the consumption of antioxidants. Parijoto fruit is proven to contain antioxidant compounds. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of parijoto fruit extract (Medinilla speciose Bl.) to decrease blood glucose levels in alloxan induced rats (Mus musculus L.). This study used 25 rats that were divided into 5 treatment groups, they were diabetes control group (Na-CMC), comparison control group (Glibenclamide), and 3 treatment groups were given 1,4 mg/20 g BB; 2,8 mg/20 g BB; and 5,6 mg/20 g BB of parijoto fruit extract. Alloxan induced rats were left for 3 days to reach hyperglycemia condition. Treatment was given for 14 days, with measurement of blood glucose levels on the 7th day and 14th day. The results showed that parijoto fruit extract can reduce blood glucose levels in alloxan induced rats. The most effective dose in reducing blood glucose levels is a dose of 5,6 mg/20 g BB.
