Abstract

Serum is a preparation with a low viscosity that has a high concentration of active ingredients so that the effect spreads more quikly to the skin surface. Glycolic acid is an AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) which has a low molecular weight. The purpose of this study is to determine whether Glycolic acid can can be made into serum gel preparations with good physical quality and stability, to determine the effect of variations of the gelling agent carbopol 940, to determine which formulas have the best physical quality and stability. The research was conducted using a gel making method by developing each formula of carbopol 940 0,5%, 1.25%, and 2% gelling agent into distilled wather. Then mix all ingredients until homogenous. Physical quality and stability testing used organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH test, adhesion test, spreadability test and irritation test. The result data was statistically tested using Kolmogorov- Smirnov, one way ANOVA, post hoc test with a confidence level of 95%. The results showed that Glycolic acid can be made into serum gel. Variations in the concentrarion of carbopol 940 affect viscosity, spreadabilyty, and adhenesion. The best serum formula is formula 1 with a concentration of 0,5 % having good physical consistency and quality. Keywords : Serum, Glycolic acid, Carbopol 940.
