Abstract
Acne is a skin condition that occurs because the oil organs in the skin produce a lot of oil. One of the causative bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus. Plants that can be used as an antibacterial are Dayak onion bulbs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations of HPMC and carbopol 940 as gelling agents on the physical quality and stability of the gel preparation of Dayak onion extract (Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr), the effect of variations of HPMC and carbopol 940 on the anti-acne gel preparation of Dayak onion extract (Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr) against the antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus. Extraction of Dayak onion bulbs by maceration method using 96% ethanol as solvent. Dayak onion bulb extract gel was made in three formulas with various concentrations of HPMC and carbopol 940 70:30; 50:50; 30:70. Each formula was tested for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, drying time, stability, and activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results of this study stated that formulas 1, 2, and 3 had good physical quality tests, but not all formulas had good stability. Formula 3 with HPMC and carbopol concentrations of 30:70 was the best formula in terms of physical quality, and stability and was able to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus with an average zone diameter of 17.60 mm.
