Abstract

Breast cancer is a deadly disease in women because it can attack the breast epithelial tissue, mucus membranes and glands. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) contains flavonoid compounds and essential oils that have cytotoxic activity against cancer cell cultures. The purpose of this study was to determine the cytotoxic activity of celery against breast cancer cell culture, to determine the content of compounds in celery that have cytotoxic activity to breast cancer cell culture and to determine the mechanism of action based on the literature review. The research method used is literature review namely looking for similarities (compare), dissimilarities (contrast), giving views (criticizing) and comparing (synthesize) national and internasional journals that meet the inclusion criteria, namely research journals, not review articles and have been published on Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Sci-Hub and Crossref with a time span form 2011-2021. The results, celery has cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cell cultures with activie compounds involved are apigenin, phthalide, sedanolidine, isofurodiene and sesquiterpenes the mechanism of the cytotoxic activity of celery’s active compounds is to decrease cell viability, inhibit the expression, inhibi the cell cycle in thr G2/M phase, induce apoptosis and induce the detoxification enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST).
