Abstract

Celery plant (Apium graveolens L.) contains phytosterols and flavonoids chemical compounds. Phytosterols and flavonoids have anticholesterol activity so that they can inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine, because phytosterols have a structure similar to cholesterol. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of celery extract (Apium graveolens L.) and to determine the effective dose of celery extract to reduce total blood cholesterol. The study was conducted experimentally using 25 male white rats which were divided into 5 groups, namely a negative control group (CMC Na 0.5%), a positive control group (simvastatin) with a dose of 10 mg/Kg BW, a celery extract group with a dose of each. 100 mg/Kg BW, 200 mg/Kg BW, and 400 mg/Kg BW. Oral treatment for 14 days was given by induction of quail egg yolk + pork oil and PTU then 14 days of administration of CMC Na, simvastatin, and a dose of celery extract. Total cholesterol examination was carried out on day 28 by the CHODPAP enzymatic method. Data analysis using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was then carried out with the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test. The results showed that celery extract (Apium graveolens L.) had activity in lowering total blood cholesterol levels and at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW could reduce total blood cholesterol levels equivalent to positive control. Keywords: Cholesterol, celery extract, lowering cholesterol levels, CHODPAP enzymatic method
