Abstract

Sterculia foetida L. leaves are one the traditional medicinal plants used as antibacterial containing saponins, flavonoids, triterpenoids, tannins and polyphenols compounds. Research aims to determine the antibacterial activity Sterculia foetida L. Ethanol leaf extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in laboratory cultures with pus patient isolates. This method used to obtain the extract by percolation using 96% ethanol solvent. The antibacterial activity test was performed by diffusion method. Dilution of the leaves extract was made in various concentrations (10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) using 2% DMSO. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphyloccoccus aureus were isolated to media PSA and VJA from both the isolated pation of pus in Dr. Moewardi Surakarta hospital while the laboratories culture came from Setia Budi Surakarta University Microbiology Laboratory The results showed that the leaves extract had an antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Inhibition zone resin of Sterculia foetida L. to Pseudomonas aeruginosa laboratories culture at concentration 50% equal to 24,3 mm, inhibition zone Sterculia foetida L. leaf extract to Pseudomonas aeruginosa pus patient isolate was 20,0 mm. Inhibition zone of Sterculia foetida L. to Staphyloccoccus aureus laboratories culture at concentration 50% equal to 22,3 mm, Sterculia foetida L leaf extract to Staphyloccoccus aureus pus patient isolate was 20,7 mm. This shows that the inhibition zone of both laboratories culture is greater than pus patient isolate. Keywords: Leaves extract, antibacterial, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus
