Abstract
Cosmetic products on the market must have efficacy in accordance with predetermined quality requirements, determining the efficacy of sunscreen preparations is very important to see the compliance of cosmetic manufacturers. The purpose of this study was to determine the SPF value and the results of microbial identification of S. aureus bacteria in samples from sunscreen gel products and contaminants from the formulations of the cosmetic industry. Samples were tested by in vitro method with UV-Vis spectrophotometer, absorbance was measured every 5 nm from a wavelength of 290 nm - 320 nm, then analyzed using Mansur's equation. Based on the research conducted, the S. aureus microbial contamination test used MSA (Mannitol Salt Agar) media which was used to determine the presence of S. aureus bacteria contained in the sunscreen gel preparation. The results showed the category of sunscreen protection with an SPF value in the positive control of 30 SPF, the results of the calculation of the SPF value according to the FDA were that sample A 18 was in the ultra category, sample B 15 was maximum and sample C 14 was maximum. The antibacterial contamination test of Staphylococcus aureus sunscreen gel from the cosmetic industry met the standard for microbial contamination, there was no colony growth on MSA media.
