Abstract

Nutgrass rhizome extract contains flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, tannins, and saponins. These compounds act as antibacterial. Nutgrass rhizome extract is formulated in a topical dosage form. namely emulgel to facilitate its use. This study used HPMC as a gelling agent with varying concentrations of emulgel preparations of nutgrass rhizome extract which aimed to determine the physical quality and antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Nutgrass rhizome extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol and then formulated with various HPMC base concentrations in each formula. F1 1%, F2% and F3 3%. Evaluation of emulgel preparations included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, emulsion type, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion stability, and antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The ethanol extract of nut grass rhizome can be made into emulgel preparations with good physical quality and good stability with various HPMC base concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3%. Based on the results of statistical tests on the antibacterial activity of grass rhizome extract emulgel. It has the best inhibition value against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. namely formula 1 (HPMC 1%) with an inhibition value of 14,58 ± 0,36 mm.
