Abstract
A burn is a tissue damage or loss caused by exposure to a high temperature source and requires good care for its healing. Betel nut (Areca catechu L.) can be used as an alternative to the wound healing process because of its active alkaloid content such as tannins, saponins and alkaloids that stimulate the formation of new cells in wound healing. The purpose of this study is to determine that betel nut ethanol extract (Areca catechu L.) can be formulated in the dosage form of emulgel, prove the activity of betel nut and determine the effectiveness of the preparation as an anti-dermal superficial burn. Ethanol extract from betel nut is obtained by maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. The manufacture of betel nut ethanol extract emulgel is divided into 3 concentrations of the active substance formula I (1.5%), formula II (2.5%) and formula III (3.5%). Testing of burn healing activities is carried out on the backs of New Zealand rabbits and then physical quality tests are carried out consisting of organoleptic examinations, pH, viscosity, adhesion, dispersal, homogeneity, and stability. Formula and activity test results data are analyzed statistically to determine differences. The results of this study showed that all concentrations of the emulgel formula of betel nut ethanol extract had an effect as an anti-burn and the emulgel formula with a concentration of 2.5% showed effective results in healing burns equivalent to positive controls, namely 98% Key words : Betel nut (Areca catechu L.), burns, emulgel, rabbit
