Abstract

The content of temu putih secondary metabolite compounds include flavonoid, saponin, alkaloids, tannins. Saponin is one of the contents in temu putih rhizome that has been studied to increase the levels of BUN, creatinine and cause damage to the kidneys. The purpose of this study was to determine whether rhizome extract has subcronic toxic effects seen from the parameters of BUN, creatinine level and histopathology of the kidney, and find out how many doses that cause toxicity. Temu putih rhizome extract was obtained by maceration. This research was conducted by complete randomized design (RAL) method with pretest and posttest design using male and female rats which are divided into 5 groups consist of 1 control group, 3 treatment groups and 1 satellite group with test dose of 250, 500 and 1000 mg / kg BW. The study was conducted for 28 days plus 14 days for satellite control. Subcronical toxicity test results briefly increased the levels of BUN as much as 3 times and creatinine 2 times of normal value and histopathologic changes of kidney organs such as inflammation, degeneration and necrosis. The greatest damage occurred in the dose group 500 mg / kg . Temu putih rhizome extracts resulted in toxic effects on BUN and creatinine levels as well as kidney histopathologic features in a short subcronical toxicity test at doses of 500 and 1000 mg / kg BW.
