Abstract

Ashitaba leaves are known to have antibacterial activity against staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Ashitaba Leaves can not directly kill the bacteria, therefore ashitaba leaves had to extract at first and then formulated into a hand sanitizer gel formulation with some sort of formula with a variation of a gelling agent ,Carbopol 940 and CMC-Na. The purpose of this study is to formulate hand sanitizer gel formulation from ashitaba leaves ethanolic extract and it will be test by the physical properties, stability, and activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Ashitaba leaves extracted by maceration method for 5 days with 70% of ethanol. The ethanol extract of ashitaba leaves is formulate into 5 formula with different gelling agent ,Carbopol 940 and CMC-Na. Gel of every formula is test by organoleptic test, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and adhesion dispersive power, stability and activity against staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Data were analyzed statistically by kolmogorov -smirnov test followed by one way ANOVA test and post hoc test with 95% acurated and there are some of the data was tested with Kolmogorov-smirnov followed by paired sample T test. The study states that the ethanol extract of ashitaba leaves can be made into hand sanitizer gel and has antibacterial activity. The difference in concentration of gelling agent Carbopol 940 and CMC-Na affect to the physical properties of gel and it’s stability. Gel with Carbopol 940 0.75% and 0.25% CMC-Na has the organoleptic, physical properties and stability is the better than the other formula. Statistical test results on the antibacterial activity maintained that the formula has antibacterial activity that has not a significant difference. key words : Angelica keiskei, ethanol extract, hand sanitizer gel, antibacterial, staphylococcus aureus
