Abstract

Treatment of diarrhea can use combination modern and traditional medicine. Basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum l. forma Citratum back) and stems lemongrass (cymopogon nardus) are plants that work as an antibacterial. This study aims to determine the activity of the combination of essential oils of basil leaves and stalks lemongrass against bacteria Escherichia coli ATTC 25 922. Basil leaves and stems lemongrass distilled separately with the steam and water method. The results of distillation made onto combination of essential oils of stems lemongrass and basil leaves with a combined ratio (1: 1; 1: 2; 2: 1; 1: 3; 3: 1). Antibacterial activity test methods in this research are the diffusion and dilution methods. Dilution method using a concentration series 100% -0.20% with differences in each level of concentration is a half. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) one way. The test result of combination diffusion method of essential oils of stems lemongrass and basil leaves of the most effective is the ratio of 1: 1 with an average diameter of 20.68 ± 0.850. Dilution result Minimum Kill Concentration (MKC) was 12.5%. The results of the study of chemical constituents of essential oil of basil leaves are Z-citral and 2,6-oktadienal. The compounds of essential oils of stems lemongrass are Z-citral and Beta myrecene which are potentially as antibacterial compounds.
