Abstract

A good lipstick should be easy to use, non irritating, non sticky, non dry and be able to maintain color on the lips. The collorant and physically shape are important components of lipstick forming. Dye and physical shape are important components of lipstick forming. Brazilin from secang wood extract (Caesalpinia sappan L.) has potentially developed as a natural colorant. Physical properties of lipstick are defining from the waxes base. Paraffin wax and bees wax are the examples of lipstick base which is frequently used in it’s formula and Then combined with lanolin as an emollient. It’s aims to determine the combination of lanolin, bees wax and paraffin wax to physical properties of lipstick, determine composition optimally formula, physical stability and irritation test. Dry powder of secang wood extracted with ethanol 96%, were thickened, and then extract identified. Thirteen formulas used 10% extract with various of bases composition lanolin, bees wax and paraffin wax were evaluated it’s physical properties including hardness, adhesion power, melting point, hedonic and pH, The optimum formula can be obtained by Simplex Lattice Design method, the results was used to analyze by software design expert. Verification of optimum formula can be done by evaluating the physical properties than statistic analize by one sample t-test. The optimum formula consist of lanolin 0,191 g, bees wax 0,401 g and paraffin wax 0,401 g. The result of one sample t-test gave no significant differences on physical characteristics between experimental and software. Optimum formula of lipstick was not irritant at topical.
