Abstract
Red betel leaf (Pipper crocatum) contains a class of alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols and tannins that have antidiabetic activity. This literature review aims to examine the presence of clinical antidiabetic activity, chemical content, effective dose of red betel, and the mechanism of action of red betel. This literature review was carried out by means of topics, data screening, data synthesis, analysis and interpretation of selecting data. The literature sources used are journals related to antidiabetes, red betel leaf, hyperglycemia by searching for scientific articles using search engines such as Google Scholar, Pubmed, journal houses such as the Science Direct repository, publishers in the form of Elsevier published in 2010 to 2021 based on inclusion criteria. The results of a literature review show that red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) can reduce blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus. The compounds of the red betel leaf group as antidiabetic are flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, polyphenols and saponins. The effective dose of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) which has an antidiabetic effect in test animals is 50 mg/kg body weight rats and 0.39 ml/kg body weight mice. The mechanism of action of active compounds that have antidiabetic activity, namely Schisandrin B and Columbin increase insulin secretion and decrease glucose 6 phosphate and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity, resulting in an increase in glycogen in the liver and a decrease in blood sugar levels. Keywords: Red betel, Piper crocatum, antidiabetic, hyperglycemia
