Abstract
Sari, A.R. 2023. Description of Hemoglobin Levels and Erythrocyte Index in Young Women in Surakarta. Scientific Writing, D3 Health Analyst Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Setia Budi University. Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood. Young women are more susceptible to anemia than young men, because young women experience menstruation every month. Adolescent girls with low hemoglobin levels, especially during menstruation, will experience red blood cell abnormalities because menstruating women do not store iron (Fe) in hemoglobin, thereby reducing iron levels and affecting the erythrocyte index. The purpose of this study was to determine hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte index in female adolescents in Surakarta. This research was conducted in February 2023 at the Surakarta regional health laboratory. This type of research is a descriptive study using 30 young women as respondents. The sample in this study used EDTA venous blood samples which were then examined for hemoglobin and erythrocyte index with a Hematology Analyzer. Based on the research results, there were 23 respondents (77%) who had normal Hb levels and 7 respondents (23%) had anemia with below normal hemoglobin values. The results of the examination of the erythrocyte index mostly had hypochromic microcytic anemia, which means that the size of the erythrocytes tended to be small, and the hemoglobin count was less than normal (less MCV, less MCHC).
