Abstract
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can induce the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in the skin which causes premature aging when the amount of ROS exceeds the ability of antioxidant defense in skin cells. Tomatoes have high antioxidant activity. Based on study by Roh et al. (2013), main active ingredient in the greatest antioxidant is tomato lycopene, which contain 30-200 mg/kg fresh fruit. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the cream of ethanol extract of tomatoes at a variation concentration of 2%, 5%, and 10% to protect the skin from UV exposure. The effectiveness of sunscreenwas tested in vitro using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and in vivo based on erythema scores in male New Zealand strain rabbits that were irradiated using UV-B Exoterra lamps for 48 hours. SPF value of stocks is calculated using the Mansur equation. The results showed that the ethanol extract cream of tomatoes had SPF values of 6,60, 13,64, and 29,51 respectively for creams with concentrations of 2%, 5%, and 10% with erythema scores 0 at 24 hours and 1 at 48 hours after exposure with UV-B Exoterra lamps. The physical quality of the cream preparations tested was organoleptic, homogenity, type of cream, viscosity, dispersibility, adhesivity, and pH. Data were analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov, One Way ANOVA test, and post hoc Tukey. The increase in extract concentration gave a significant difference to the SPF value and erythema score. Organoleptic, homogenityand cream type test data were analyzed descriptively. Keywords: ethanol extract of tomatoes, cream, sunscreen, lycopene, SPF, in vivo
