Abstract

Diuretics are drugs that can increase the rate of urine formation and function to inhibit the body's reabsorption of sodium and potassium ions. Green tea leaves have a diuretic effect due to the presence of flavonoid compounds. The aims of this study were to determine the class of compounds in green tea leaf extract, and to determine the activity of green tea leaf extract as a diuretic against male white rats of the Wistar strain and to obtain an effective dose of green tea leafextract as a diuretic drug. This study used 70% ethanol extract by maceration method. The test animals used were 25 male white rats which were divided into 5 treatment groups with negative controls given 0.5% CMC-Na, positive controls given furosemide 3.6 mg/kg BW, and three test groups given green tea leaf extract with dose 91; 182; 364 mg/kg BW rat. Mice were put into metabolic cages, urine volume was recorded at 1 to 6 hours and statistical analysis was carried out. The results of the study showed that the ethanol extract of green tea leaves had diuretic activity as indicated by an increase in hourly urin volume, a dose of 182 mg/kg BW rats was an effective dose that provided diuretic activity by increasing urine volume in white male Wistar rats. Keywords : Green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.), diuretic, urine volume.
