Abstract
Bacteria-induced infectious skin disease is a big problem not only in Indonesia but also in the world. Pathogenic bacteria often resulting in infection in human skin is Staphylococcus aureus constituting piogenic pathogen generally resulting in infection in wound. This research aimed to find out the antibacterial activity of basil volatile oil and cinnamon bark, and the combination of them on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The methods employed in this research were diffusion and dilution. Diffusion method was carried out using 100% concentration with ratios: 1:1; 1:2; 2:1; 1:3; 3:1. Dilution method was carried out using varying concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.125%; 1.56%; 0.78%; 0.39%; 0.19%. Data of research was then processed using a statistical analysis with one-way Variance Analysis (ANOVA), so that significant result was obtained from the data. The result of research with diffusion method found that the most effective inhibition power of combination at 100% concentration was ratio of 1:1 with inhibition diameter of 17.16 ± 0.381. Dilution method employed volatile oil concentration series; to see the Minimum Killing Concentration (KBM), bacterial inoculation was conducted on VJA (Vogel Jhonson Agar) media obtaining KBM result at concentration of 1.56%. Considering the result of research, it could be found that combination of basil volatile oil and cinnamon bark had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Keywords: Staphylococcus aureus, antibacterial, volatile oil, Ocimum basilicum L. Cinnamomum burmannii Nees ex BL.
